Pour célébrer le 25e anniversaire du Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, l’institut a organisé deux concerts étoilés fin octobre 2009, chaque projet de loi regorgeant d’intronisés de toutes les décennies. Tout est capturé ici sur une boîte à quatre disques (les nuits individuelles sont disponibles en deux ensembles de deux CD séparés). Les couvertures et les collaborations étaient à l’ordre du jour, généralement dans des accords judicieux: James Taylor était assis avec Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jeff Beck a repris sa vitrine de guitare sur « Superstition » de Stevie Wonder, Darlene Love a dirigé le groupe E-Street, Metallica joyeusement soutient Ozzy Osbourne sur une paire de chansons de Black Sabbath, U2 mène Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith et Roy Bittan à travers « Parce que la nuit ». Les surprises ne sont pas tout à fait à l’ordre du jour – la seule performance qui réinvente l’original est la lecture instrumentale de Jeff Beck de « A Day in the Life » des Beatles – et cela vaut aussi pour les camées du plus jeune ensemble: Rage Contre la machine, Tom Morello apparaît naturellement lors du piétinement de Springsteen dans « London Calling », John Legend remplace Marvin Gaye pendant le set de Wonder et Fergie fait Merry Clayton pendant U2 et « Gimme Shelter » de Mick Jagger. Là encore, qui se tourne vers une célébration du passé pour autre chose que du réconfort? Un rappel de ce qu’ils ont aimé en premier lieu? Ce concert offre en effet cela, et s’il y a des moments cahoteux – le jumelage de Lou Reed et Metallica sur « Sweet Jane » défie toute logique – ils sont contrebalancés par le plaisir des professionnels qui se promènent dans leurs dernières pages. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
